It’s bad enough that some fire retardants added to consumer products contain chemicals linked to cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It’s even worse when those chemicals are added to consumer products that pose no serious fire risk. Yet that’s exactly what happens with many infants’ and children’s products in California, due to an arcane rule by the even more arcane Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation. SB 772 would have exempted strollers, infant carriers, bassinets and nursing pillows from requirements to be treated with fire retardant unless the bureau determined the products pose a serious fire hazard.
